    2. Tanaka, Monahan, & Seals Formula 

    The Tanaka formula is a bit more refined and is represented by the formula

    Max Heart Rate = 208 – (Age x 0.7).

    This formula offers an adjustment based on potential age-related declines in cardiovascular function. It’s considered slightly more accurate than the more basic age-subtraction method, as it accounts for more variability. 

    3. Inbar Formula 

    Another method used is the Inbar Formula, which calculates the maximum heart rate with the equation.

    Max Heart Rate = 205.8 – (0.685 x Age)

    It similarly accounts for age’s impact on heart rate but differs slightly in the coefficients used, providing another comparative option to find what suits you best. 

    4. Oakland Nonlinear Formula 

    The Oakland Nonlinear Formula is intended to provide a more accurate calculation by using the formula:

    Max Heart Rate: 192 – (0.007 x age² )

The formula for men is HRmax = 202 – (0.55 x age), while for women, it is HRmax = 216 – (1.09 x age). Genetics, fitness level, and overall health also contribute to individual differences in maximum heart rate beyond gender distinctions. Understanding these differences is crucial for tailoring exercise programs effectively.

    How Do I Find My Pulse or Heart Rate?

    Finding your pulse or heart rate is simpler than you might think. You can use your index and middle finger to gently press on either your wrist, just below the base of your thumb or the side of your neck, just under your jawline. These areas are known as your radial and carotid pulse points, respectively. Once located, count the beats you feel for 15 seconds, then multiply that number by four to get your beats per minute (bpm).
