    Clamshell exercises may help some people with knee discomfort when weak glute medius muscles contribute to poor knee tracking. They are not a cure, but stronger lateral glutes can improve hip control and reduce inward knee collapse during movement.

    Where should I feel the clamshell exercise?

    You should mainly feel the clamshell in the side of the upper glute, around the gluteus medius area. If you feel it mostly in the front of the hip, try reducing the range of motion and keeping the pelvis more stable.

    Should I do clamshells before or after my workout?

    Clamshells work best before a lower-body workout as a glute activation drill, especially before squats, lunges, hip thrusts, or step-ups. They can also be used at the end of a workout for extra lateral glute work.

    Do clamshells build bigger glutes?

    Clamshells can help improve glute activation and glute medius strength, but they are not the best primary exercise for building large glutes. For size, they work best when combined with heavier exercises like hip thrusts, lunges, and Romanian deadlifts.

    Why do my hips click during clamshells?

    Mild hip clicking without pain is often related to tendon movement or hip positioning. If clicking is painful, sharp, or persistent, reduce the range of motion and consider getting assessed by a qualified professional.

    How often should I do clamshell exercises?

    Most people can perform clamshells two to four times per week, especially as part of a warm-up or activation routine. Because the exercise is low-load, recovery demands are usually low when form is controlled.

    Are banded clamshells better than bodyweight clamshells?

    Banded clamshells are usually better for progression because they add resistance and increase lateral glute tension. Bodyweight clamshells are still useful for beginners, rehab settings, and learning proper pelvic control.
